dōTERRA Peppermint Mentha piperita

The peppermint plant is a hybrid of watermint and spearmint.  It is known for it’s cooling effect and is often used to soothe head aches or tension.  A high menthol content, like that found in the doTERRA Peppermint essential oil, distinguishes the best quality Peppermint from other products.

Source to You - dōTERRA Peppermint essential oil

Sean Poynter and Emily Wright visit a peppermint farm in the U.S. Northwest and talk with Richard, who is a 3rd generation grower and distiller of peppermint essential oil. Richard's great grandfather emigrated from Germany in the late 1800s and, with his son, began growing the same variety of peppermint that they grow now in the fields 80 years later.

When a plant is ready to be harvested, it is cut with a wind rower then left to dry in the field for 3-5 days, depending on temperature. It is then collected with a forage harvester, which chops the stem and leaves and blows them into a tub carried by the harvester. When they are filled and sealed, high pressure steam is blown into the tub, which explodes the oil glands under the leaves and releases the oil. The biomass left after the oil is separated is allowed to compost until the end of the season, when it is then spread back over the fields.

Emily visits a family owned peppermint farm in the Northwest U.S. This year, 520 acres of peppermint will be harvested in 8 days, steaming more than 100 tubs per day. The plants are harvested before full maturity - this reduces the yield, but gives a better quality oil.
